About this tool: Word counter
Handy for essays, social posts, product descriptions and meta tags with a length limit. The counter updates as you type and works with accented letters.
A word is a run of letters and digits, and it can contain an apostrophe or a hyphen. Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute, a typical pace for silent reading.
Formula
Reading time = words รท 200. Sentences are counted by the full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis that ends them. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line.
Worked example
"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. It was a sunny day!" has 14 words, 64 characters (51 without spaces) and 2 sentences.
