About this tool: Date difference calculator

Use it to count the days to a holiday, the length of a contract, a notice period or how long ago something happened. The order of the dates does not matter, the tool always returns a positive span.

The result is shown twice: as a total number of days, and as whole years, months and days. Months are counted on the calendar, so 31 January to 1 March is 1 month and 1 day.

Formula

Total days = difference between the two dates in calendar days (+1 if the last day is counted). Years, months and days are whole calendar units, counted from the earlier date.

Worked example

1 January 2026 to 1 March 2026 is 59 days: 8 whole weeks, or 2 months and 0 days. With the last day counted it is 60 days.

Frequently asked questions

Is the start date included?

By default the result is the difference, so 1 January to 2 January is 1 day. Tick the box to count both the first and the last day, which gives 2.

How are leap years handled?

Dates are counted on the real calendar, so 29 February is included in leap years.

Does it count working days?

No. Use the working days calculator to skip weekends and holidays.
