About this tool: Discount calculator

A discount of 25% takes a quarter off the price. When a shop adds a second discount, such as an extra 10% at the till, it is taken from the already reduced price, so the two do not add up to 35%.

The calculator shows the final price, the money you save and the real total discount, so you can compare offers like 30% off against 25% plus 10%.

Formula

Final price = price × (1 − discount1 ÷ 100) × (1 − discount2 ÷ 100). Total discount = (1 − (1 − d1 ÷ 100) × (1 − d2 ÷ 100)) × 100.

Worked example

A 200 item with 25% off costs 150, so you save 50. Add an extra 10%: 150 × 0.90 = 135, you save 65 and the total discount is 32.5%, not 35%.

Frequently asked questions

Do two discounts add up?

No. The second discount applies to the price after the first, so 25% and 10% give 32.5%, not 35%.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Divide the sale price by 1 minus the discount. A price of 150 after 25% off was 150 ÷ 0.75 = 200.

Does the result include VAT?

It works on the number you enter. If your price includes VAT the result does as well.
