About this tool: Hourly rate calculator
Employers quote pay in different ways: an hourly wage for shift work, a monthly salary for office jobs, a yearly package for senior roles. This calculator puts them on one scale so you can compare two offers or check a freelance rate.
The hourly rate is the yearly pay divided by the hours you work in a year. The day figure assumes a five-day week. It works on the amount you type, so use gross or net pay consistently.
Formula
Hours per year = hours per week × paid weeks. Yearly pay = hourly rate × hours per year (or monthly pay × 12). Hourly rate = yearly pay ÷ hours per year.
Worked example
25 per hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks: 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours, so 25 × 2,080 = 52,000 per year, 4,333.33 per month, 1,000 per week and 200 per day.

Frequently asked questions
How do I turn a monthly salary into an hourly rate?
Multiply the monthly pay by 12 and divide by the hours you work in a year, which is hours per week times 52. A monthly 4,000 with 40-hour weeks gives 48,000 ÷ 2,080 = 23.08 per hour.
Should I use 52 weeks if I get paid holiday?
Yes, if holiday is paid, those weeks are paid weeks. Use fewer weeks only when you want the rate for hours actually worked, for example a freelancer who takes unpaid time off.
Is the result gross or net?
The calculator does not know. It converts the number you enter, so a gross hourly wage gives gross monthly and yearly pay. For take-home pay use the gross to net salary calculator.
